Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection and In Vitro Fertilization

Dr. Peyman Saadat practices as a fertility physician at the Reproductive Fertility Center in West Hollywood, California. There, Dr. Peyman Saadat helps patients create the family they have been hoping for.

During in vitro fertilization (IVF), Dr. Peyman Saadat retrieves eggs from his female patient via needle aspiration. The retrieved eggs are then combined with her partners' (or donor sperm) and the resultant embryos are closely watched. When the egg and sperm are combined, it is almost always done with a process called ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). This is an advanced technique that is performed using a microscope to identify and select a single, viable sperm. This sperm will then be used to manually assist with fertilization. This type of advanced reproductive technology is done by an experienced embryologist.

ICSI has been shown to increase the overall success rate of fertilization within an IVF cycle. Dr. Peyman Saadat treats both male and female factor infertility. ICSI has proven particularly successful in cases of male factor infertility. The reason for this is that it allows the embryologist to select a single, viable looking sperm and pierce the membrane of the egg, making fertilization more likely to occur, as compared to IVF cycles without the use of ICSI.
